Summer 2

In Summer 2 we are learning...

In Phonics this half term we are learning the new GPCs: air, ure and er. Once these final three GPCs for the Reception year have been taught, we will be spending time consolidating all of our phonics learning that has taken place throughout the year.

In Reading children will read aloud simple sentences and books that are consistent with their phonic knowledge, including some common exception words. Children will be developing their skills of predicting and discussing key events and characters, answering 'how' and 'why' questions to explain their ideas in greater detail.

In Writing children will be story mapping and retelling 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch' and writing their own alternative story ending. Children will also be applying their topic based knowledge about modes of transport to compose and write their own information sentences. They will also practise writing short letters, based upon 'Dear Mermaid ' and will write postcards.

In our daily Rhyme Time, we will be singing 'The Wheels on the Bus',  'The Grand Old Duke of York' and will be recapping our favourite rhymes from the year.

In Maths we will be grouping and sharing and exploring odd and even numbers. Children will play with and build doubles, identify units of repeating patterns and create and explore their own pattern rules. Children will be exploring and using positional language, which they will use to give instructions to build constructions, as well as exploring maps and creating maps and deepening their understanding of patterns and relationships.

During Topic lessons, children will be learning about and describing some seasonal changes that take place in our local area in Summer. They will also be learning how to stay safe in the sun, finding out about animals that live on British beaches as well as  some key features of different modes of transport. Children will also be comparing trains from past to present and will travelling via train from Burley Park to Leeds and drawing a simple map that includes the OS symbol for a train station.

In RE we will be learning about special places.

In our PE lessons children will b exploring the different ways of throwing, rolling and stopping a ball.

In DT children will be exploring different materials and using their knowledge to create boats for a boat race in our local beck.

In PSHE children will be learning about the different jobs that adults have.

In Music children will be exploring our world through music and nursery rhymes and action songs.

Our Oracy focus is 'My favourite journey'. Please see an e-mail sent to parents for  further information regarding this, including the week your child can bring in a showing.

Knowledge Organisers should be used to support your child throughout the topic being covered. They provide end points which is the knowledge that children will gain from this unit of work. They also show the learning that has taken place before and how this will link to future learning. Children will use these both in school and at home to supplement their learning, allowing us to work collaboratively together.

Knowledge Organisers are designed to help provide additional support and direction for families to support learning at home. They can be used as a point of reference for year group knowledge and expectations within the given topic area.
