Jellyfish!

The children have been learning about the different animals that live under the sea.  They have learnt about fish, molluscs, crustaceans, reptiles and mammals. We read a non-fiction book on display in our classroom titled 'The Big Book of Blue' to further explore sea turtles, flying fish, seahorses, jellyfish and octopuses. The class had lots of questions about jellyfish in particular and so we spent time discussing the features of a jellyfish. Children looked at lots of pictures of jellyfish and were asked what they noticed. We talked about how the strings you can see are called tentacles and they can sting you which is painful. We discussed how the funny blob you can see looks like a head but it's actually a body (known as a bell) and children loved learning that they have a mouth in the middle of their body as well as the fact that they don't have bones or a brain! They were fascinated to watch videos of jellyfish moving and also to see how they stun their prey and actually sting. Here are some of our jellyfish that we made in class.
