As part of our work on exploring how we can care for the wildlife heading into winter, lots of children have enjoyed spotting birds in the playground and park. This led us to think about what birds eat in the winter months and how it is much harder for them to find food. We talked about ways that we can help the birds. Lots of children have bird feeders in their gardens at home and we thought we would enjoy making bird feeders to hang in our OLA and playground. We thought it was important to put it in a position where birds would feel safe to fly to i.e. not too close to the ground and sheltered away from any enemies! The children used pine cones, raisins, lard and bird food to create a bird food. Our hands got very sticky! We look forward to seeing which birds they will attract as we have learning some British bird names.
