Autumn 1

In Autumn 1 we are learning:

In Writing, we will use the 1989 film version of the BFG to write our own opening and build-up to the story - thinking about how we can create suspense with our writing. We will then write an instructional text 'How to make a woolly mammoth'.

In Maths, we will be focusing on Place Value to 1000; learning to read, write and partition numbers to 1000; order, estimate and compare numbers to 1000 and place numbers along a number line. We will then look at adding and subtraction - looking for patterns and connections and using our knowledge to estimate.

In History, we will be looking at the Stone Age. We will study the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic periods and the changes made over that period from hunter/gatherers to settlers. We will also consider how early humans may have developed religion to explain the world around them.

In French we will learn how to introduce ourselves. Our pronunciation focus will be j, u, on. We will how to count to 10 and how to read numbers up to 10.

In Oracy we will continue to develop our skills through weekly debate and class discussion.

In RE we will be learning Hinduism and what it means to be a Hindu in Britain today.

In Science, we will be learning about Rocks and Soil. We will learn about the different types of rocks and their properties. We will also look at how fossils are made.

In PSHE, our topic is Identity, Society and Equality: Celebrating difference. We will be looking at the differences between us all and how brilliant it is to be unique!

In Art, we will be exploring prehistoric painting. We will look at the techniques used in cave paintings and use paint and mixed media to create our own versions.

In PE, we will be developing our football skills and looking at ways we can use mindfulness to improve our health and wellbeing.

Spellings will be taught on a Friday and tested the following Friday. The spellings for all of Autumn 1 spellings can be found below.

Knowledge Organisers should be used to support your child throughout the topic being covered. They provide end points which is the knowledge that children will gain from this unit of work. They also show the learning that has taken place before and how this will link to future learning. Children will use these both in school and at home to supplement their learning, allowing us to work collaboratively together.

Knowledge Organisers are designed to help provide additional support and direction for families to support learning at home. They can be used as a point of reference for year group knowledge and expectations within the given topic area.
